1. Executive Assistant to the Founding Directors

Position overview

This is a rare opportunity to provide Executive Assistant (EA) support to the Founding Directors of the Environmental Justice Foundation, a leading international environmental and human rights organisation.

The EA will play a critical role, supporting the Directors to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of EJF’s campaigns and field programmes in the UK and internationally. The EA will: undertake a range of administrative tasks; coordinate and promote effective team-working; help build EJF’s visibility and engagement across multiple audiences and optimise our income and impact.

This is a challenging, busy and varied role that requires superb interpersonal and communications skills, a friendly ‘can-do’ approach, alongside commitment and determination to deliver on EJF’s ambitious plans to Protect People and Planet.

Key responsibilities:

  • Full administrative support to the Founding Directors (including staff management, coordination of diaries and meetings).
  • Coordination and monitoring of progress towards campaign outcomes, reporting to the Founding Directors and undertaking specific actions as directed by them.
  • Production of extensive high-quality communications – letters, briefings and reports, blogs, speeches and presentations.
  • Organisation of EJF internal and external events and public outreach.
  • Planning and supporting logistics and protocols for international trips and teams.
  • Representing EJF in external meetings as requested.
  • Supporting fundraising and communications teams; special events and partnerships.

Essential skills and attributes:

  • Demonstrable experience in a similar role.
  • Outstanding organisational, project, interpersonal and people-management skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly and multi-task, responding to needs and opportunities.
  • Excellent writing and presentational skills.
  • Willingness to address difficult issues, understanding the absolute need for integrity, confidentiality and discretion; the role requires tenacity, determination and patience
  • Able to work independently and according to specific direction, the EA will have strong interpersonal skills and team-working.
  • Accuracy and reliability.
  • Excellent spoken and written English.

Desirable skills:

  • Degree level or above.
  • Proficiency in relevant language/s (French, Spanish, German, Chinese).

2. Oceans Campaigner and Programme Coordinator

Based: Bath or London with regular travel to Liberia (between 4 and 6 times per year) and need for travel to other locations
Tenure: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: £30,000 - £38,000 depending upon experience and location

Position overview

EJF’s Oceans Campaign protects the marine environment, its biodiversity and the livelihoods dependent upon it. In West Africa, EJF is working to eradicate illegal fishing, build support for community-led sustainable fisheries, and protect threatened habitats and marine species with special focus on sharks, rays and turtles.

The role will involve: desk and field research; project, staff and budget management; advocacy, public outreach and media engagement in West Africa and the EU. The role will work at the grassroots to bring essential information and evidence on illegal fishing and threats to marine biodiversity to national and international attention.

Key responsibilities:

  • Mentor and manage the EJF team in Liberia, monitoring progress against KPIs and agreed budgets and outcomes.
  • Build the capacity and scope of EJF’s Fisheries Information Network, gathering and sharing information on illegal fishing and marine wildlife conservation.
  • Research and produce reports and briefings, and other communications materials, including for digital and traditional media.
  • Represent EJF in external events including with EU Commission and national governments, with donors and supporters.
  • Undertake field research in West Africa, gathering evidence, film and photos, with a particular focus on Liberia.

You are the right candidate if you:

  • Are educated to degree-level in a relevant discipline.
  • Have a minimum of 3 years relevant professional experience.
  • Are great communicator, able to present research and investigative findings to multiple audiences, including government, industry, media, the public and donors.
  • Are a proven people and project manager able to motivate and mentor to get the best from EJF’s Liberia team.
  • Have great negotiation skills, are diplomatic and tactful even under pressure.
  • Have experience working in remote and challenging areas, where your tenacity, resilience and problem-solving skills have helped secure positive outcomes.
  • Work well independently, you’re a team-player who applies your skills for the greater good.
  • Know that change is hard to win, but worth winning.

You may also have:

  • Experience of journalism/published writing or film-making/photography.
  • Proficiency in other European languages (French, Spanish, German).

Sustainable Fashion volunteer researcher

The successful candidate will be based in EJF’s Bath office.

Period: 3 months

EJF is looking for a creative and enthusiastic volunteer researcher to be part of its work to protect people and planet.

We are looking for a researcher to produce a campaign report on the environmental and human rights issues linked to fashion, with a major focus on cotton and synthetic or semi-synthetic fibres such as viscose.

The report will help support EJF’s calls for more organic, fairly-traded and climate neutral cotton production as a means to support livelihood needs in the Global South.

As well as researching and writing the report, you may be involved in writing webpages, blogs or other social media, as well as coming up with new ways to engage the public with this important issue.

Alongside the report, we would like support to develop and promote our campaign T-shirts, by researching new fashion designers we can approach, and ways in which we can market the designs effectively.

This is an exciting chance to gain valuable experience in the internal workings of a charity working on global issues relating to the global environment and human rights.

Main duties:

  • Research and write campaign report; conduct image research for the report.
  • Work with the comms team to produce webpages, social media features and blogs.
  • Research fashion designers and brands to approach with our campaign.
  • Help promote EJF T-shirt production and marketing and events on sustainable fashion.

Required skills:

  • Excellent research, writing and communications skills, with attention to detail.
  • Good planning and organisational skills.

Working hours: 9am to 6pm, 3 days a week.

Remuneration: This is a volunteer position. Travel to or within Bath of up to £8.90 and £4 for lunch expenses per day will be covered.
